Hey fellow freelancers, it’s Sade – your friendly freelance creative handling email marketing, project management, and all things content creation. As we get into the holiday season, I can’t help but share the thoughts racing through my mind. You know, the classic freelancer dilemmas: “Should I take a break over the holidays?” “How’s the savings looking?” “Am I set for next year?”.
Normally, I’d be grinding away during the holidays, trying to stock up on that extra bit of security. But guess what? This year, I’ve got something else in mind. I’m all about that merry mindset. It’s time to set some boundaries, make some money, and actually enjoy the holiday season for a change.
If you’ve ever found yourself asking these same questions or daydreaming about a more joyful freelancing experience, you’re in the right place. Because, let’s be real, we all deserve a bit more joy in our journey, especially during the holiday season. So, here are my 7 tips for holiday self-care.
1. Reflect on the year
Take a moment to reflect on the highs and lows of the past year. Celebrate your achievements, no matter how small, and use any setbacks as stepping stones for growth. Recognizing your journey is the first step towards a positive mindset.
2. Set Realistic Goals
In the spirit of the season, set realistic goals for yourself. Prioritize tasks, and don’t overwhelm yourself with unnecessary commitments. A manageable workload allows for a smoother balance between work and festivities.
3. Create a Work-Life Balance
Establishing a healthy work-life balance is key. Set clear boundaries for your working hours, take regular breaks, and resist the temptation to overwork. Remember, a well-rested freelancer is a more productive one.
4. Take Time Off
Consider gifting yourself the luxury of time off. Communicate with your clients in advance, letting them know your availability. Taking a break allows you to recharge and return with fresh perspectives.
5. Digital Detox
Amidst the virtual world of freelancing, a digital detox is essential. Limit your screen time, especially during the holidays. Create tech-free zones to disconnect and focus on the present moment with friends & family.
6. Incorporate Mindful Practices
Introduce mindfulness practices into your routine. Whether it’s meditation, deep breathing, or a short walk, these activities can alleviate stress and improve your overall well-being.
7. Plan for the New Year
Look ahead to the upcoming year with a sense of purpose. Set realistic goals and create a flexible business plan. Planning for the future not only instills confidence but also provides a sense of direction.
As we step into the holiday season, looking forward to plane rides, the warmth of family get-togethers, the excitement of holiday shopping, and the promise of delicious feasts, we also find ourselves amidst the hustle and bustle of joyous moments. As grateful as I am for this time of year, it’s only natural to consider the potential stressors—juggling expectations and managing personal boundaries. In preparation, I’m actively gearing up to incorporate these self-care tips into my own holiday routine. How about joining me in not just celebrating the season but also prioritizing our well-being? After all, ‘tis the season to take care of ourselves!
